Frequently Asked Questions

Sadaqah is given to the needy to receive a reward from Allah and not gain any respect or appreciation from people. Sharing knowledge, supporting schools, contributing to the construction of Mosques, digging a water well, establishing libraries for the public, providing assistance for travelers, serving your neighbors and relatives in need, supporting the needy, sponsoring orphans, financially helping the debtors, and any other means by which to do good to an individual or a community are types of Sadaqah.

Sadaqah Jariyah is a continuous charity contribution whose reward prevails long even after one passes away. For instance, if a person digs a water well in a village and the villagers benefit from it is a Sadaqah Jariyah. Someone establishing a school where children get an education is also a Sadaqah Jariyah because its effect will remain for generations.

Zakat is the third pillar of Islam and is a form of worship that involves wealth. However, it is obligatory upon Muslims to pay a portion of his earnings once in a lunar (Hijra) year to the poor and the needy when their earnings reach a prescribed amount (called Nisab” ) above their needs. Commanded to the Muslims in the second year of Hijra Allah (SWT) says in the Holy Qur’an:And establish regular Prayer and give Zakah, and bow down your heads with those who bowdown (in prayer).” (2:43)

Zakat is a mandatory charity in Islam, a purification of wealth, given to the needy to promote social equality and help those in need.
